Our Story
Moyock United Methodist Church was established in approximately 1810 on the corner of South Mills Road and Camellia Drive in Moyock. It was later moved to the corner of Highway 168 (now Caratoke Highway) and Puddin’ Ridge Road. As long as I can remember, there was always a Building Fund at this church, and prior to 1995, there was a balance of $50,000 in it. Many people gave special donations to this Fund upon the death of a loved one, as part of their tithing, special occasions on the church calendar, etc.
In 1995, it was apparent that we needed more space, and an organized capital campaign was begun in 1995 with the desire to raise an additional $200,000. This goal was achieved, and two donations of land were received along with a generous gift for furnishings in the proposed new facilities. We have always had members who gave from their hearts and who met every need we had, despite trying economic times.
In January of 2001, our church family began to pray the prayer of Jabez in First Chronicles, “Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!” God did bless us, and we moved into our present facilities in March, 2003. These facilities consisted of our worship and education building, and a daycare building. At first we were the administrators for the daycare operations but have since found that it is better for us to rent out this property to an established daycare provider. We are now leasing this building to Foundations Child Development Center, LLC.
At the present time, we are considering purchasing the property directly in front of the church so that we can have better visibility from the highway and expand our ministries. A final decision on this will be made at a later date.
We have a Pastor now that I affectionately call “The Grant Lady.” She has been so successful at obtaining grants that have opened up new ministries for us. Our Summer Literacy Camp that runs every summer now involves three of our local Methodist churches and targets early childhood literacy in North Carolina’s rural communities.
We may be small in number, but we are a caring, mission-oriented congregation that strives to be the hands and feet of Jesus in our community.
